Why Bowlus Stabilization Jacks Are Superior to Self-Leveling Systems

Learn how to use the Bowlus stabilization jacks and why they’re a smarter choice than traditional self-leveling systems.

While other RVs rely on heavy, power-hungry, and failure-prone automatic leveling, Bowlus keeps things elegant and reliable. Our manual rear jacks offer rock-solid stability without the extra weight or complexity—perfect for luxury travel where simplicity and performance matter most.

✅ Lightweight

✅ Off-grid friendly

✅ No risk of mechanical failure

Because with Bowlus, less truly is more.

FAQs

The stabilization jacks on a Bowlus are designed specifically to stabilize the unit once it is parked. It is critical to note that these should never be used to crank the Bowlus up or down to level it; that task is handled solely by the jockey wheel at the front of the trailer.

While you may see automatic self-leveling systems on other RVs, Bowlus intentionally avoids them for two main reasons:
Weight: These systems are very heavy and contradict our lightweight, aerodynamic engineering philosophy.
Power Consumption: Automatic leveling systems suck a significant amount of power. Our approach is to keep the system mechanical, which is more reliable and only takes a few seconds to operate.

Every Bowlus comes with a dedicated stabilization crank. You simply hand-crank the four jacks (one at each corner) down until they make firm contact with the ground.

Yes. If you are looking to make the process even quicker, you can attach a specific bit to the bottom of a small power drill. This allows you to bring the jacks up and down with minimal effort. If you choose to use a drill, always ensure you do not operate it too quickly and verify that you are rotating in the correct direction to avoid over-extension or mechanical strain.

Mechanical jacks provide a “no-fail” solution that supports the off-grid lifestyle. Without the complexity of electronic motors and sensors, you have a system that is lighter, easier to maintain, and doesn’t drain your lithium battery reserves. This simplicity ensures that your stabilization is robust and reliable regardless of your location.

Hi, I’m Geneva Long, CEO of Bowlus, and today we’re going to be talking all about the stabilization jacks on the Bowlus. Now, first off, you should never use these to crank up or down your Bowlus—that’s solely for the jockey wheel on the front. These are just stabilization jacks.

You might have heard of self-leveling on other RVs, and these are, you know, very heavy first of all, so you won’t find those on a Bowlus. Also, they suck a lot of power, and so Bowlus’ approach is to make that mechanical. And why not, when it only takes you a few seconds?

So, let me get started and show you what that looks like. Now, with your Bowlus, you’ll get a stabilization crank like this, and you can hand crank all of the four stabilization jacks up and down like that.

If you’re looking to make it even quicker, you also can add a specific bit onto a bottom of a small drill and use that to bring up and down the stabilization jacks as well. If you’re using a drill, always be sure not to do it too quickly and make sure you’re going the right way. Thanks so much, and let us know if you have any other questions!
