Bowlus is the original riveted aluminum travel trailer, predating all others with a story spanning over nine decades. Founded by Hawley Bowlus (who built the Spirit of St. Louis), the brand applies aerospace engineering to land travel. Unlike “assemblers” who buy 3rd-party parts, Bowlus manufactures over 70% of its components in-house at its Oxnard, California facility to maintain total quality control.

Bowlus uses 2024 T3 “Alclad” aircraft-grade aluminum, which is vastly superior to the 3000-series alloys used by other manufacturers.
Tensile Strength: 2024 T3 has a rating of 427 MPA, compared to just 186 MPA for standard RV aluminum.
Durability: This higher strength makes the Bowlus significantly more resistant to environmental damage, such as hail, which often pockmarks softer trailers.
Monocoque Design: The strength of a Bowlus comes from its skin, not a heavy steel frame. This “space frame” approach allows the trailer to be roughly half the weight of equivalent-sized RVs.

Authentic Aircraft Rivets: Bowlus uses structural 2117 aluminum alloy rivets (identifiable by the dimple in the head). When bucked, the temper of the rivet changes to match the 2024 aluminum.
Precision Spacing: Rivets are spaced exactly 1 inch apart for all 5,000 fasteners. This ensures the tensile strength is continuous across the seam, similar to an aircraft wing.
Hand-Bucking: Each rivet is set by a two-person team (a riveter and a bucker) to exacting tolerances of 1,000th of an inch.

Integrated Power: Bowlus pioneered the first production all-electric RVs. The power system is an integrated Unix-based computer network connecting the inverter, lithium batteries, and solar.
Efficiency: A Bowlus can run a microwave and induction cooktop simultaneously while plugged into a standard 15-amp household outlet by “boosting” power from the batteries.
Solar: The Rivet features 400W of AeroSolar on the roof, expandable to 660W total.

Insulation: Uses rigid polystyrene insulation (moisture-resistant and high R-value) rather than cheap fiberglass, preventing the “musty” smell and mold common in other RVs.
Material Integrity: No laminates or “fake wood” photos are used. The interior features real Baltic birch plywood and anodized aluminum.
Four-Season Protection: All water lines and systems are contained within the insulated shell. Combined with hydronic radiant heating and heated floors, it is a true winter-capable RV.

No other RV undergoes this level of scrutiny:
252-Point Inspection: Every unit completes a massive checklist and a road test before leaving the factory.
Triple Water Testing: The shell is pressure-tested for leaks at multiple stages of production—after initial riveting, after vent installation, and after final door fitting.

AeroMove is an optional remote-controlled dual-motor system. It allows you to move the Bowlus (which is so light a small adult can move it on a level surface) into tight spots or perform a 360-degree turn using a handheld remote, eliminating the stress of traditional backing maneuvers.

Thank you for joining us! I’m Geneva Long, CEO of Bowlus, and today I’m sharing the Bowlus story, including insights into how we manufacture our spectacular RVs. Bowlus has the most iconic and authentic story in the industry. As the original riveted aluminum travel trailer, it predates all others, spanning over nine decades. This legacy would have remained in history books if not for the vision of the ownership group I’ve led for over a decade. Having personally restored a 1935 Bowlus, we envisioned improving the form with an all-aluminum, fully monocoque construction to provide the lightness and sustainability we sought for the highest quality RV.

Our goal was to create an RV that allowed people to travel on their terms—whether off-grid, working from anywhere, or traveling with family and pets. Hawley Bowlus, an expert in aerodynamics who supervised the construction of the Spirit of St. Louis, designed the first riveted aluminum travel trailer in 1934. His designs were so revolutionary they inspired copycats like the 1936 Airstream Clipper. While the original was advanced for its time, my team and I envisioned Bowlus as the best trailer for the modern age: lightweight, aerodynamic, and defining luxury.

There are nine key factors that make a Bowlus superior. First, our unique shape and monocoque frame ensure unrivaled drivability and aerodynamics. Second, the floor plan allows for a private bedroom and en-suite while remaining compact enough for destinations off-limits to large RVs. Third is lightness; a Bowlus is about half the weight of equivalent trailers, meaning a small adult can move it on a level surface. Fourth is quality. While most of the industry uses the same outsourced parts, we manufacture 70% of ours in-house, utilizing marine-grade components for the rest.

Fifth is our rigorous technology and performance standards, followed by sixth, luxury comfort, which we consider essential rather than optional. Seventh is our ownership experience, supported by a premium nationwide dealer group. Eighth, as a private company, we have the flexibility to focus on quality over short-term profits. Finally, we focus on protecting your investment. Most RV manufacturers are just “assemblers” using cheap sub-components, staples, and glue. In contrast, Bowlus uses honest manufacturing techniques, high-quality materials, and a 252-point quality control check—including a road test—before any vehicle leaves our facility in Oxnard, California.

Our manufacturing process begins with a TIG-welded space frame, a feature usually reserved for race cars and airplanes. While other manufacturers buy heavy steel frames, we cut aluminum tubing to tolerances of 1/100th of an inch. However, the frame isn’t where the strength comes from—it comes from the skin. Like an aircraft, the Bowlus is a true monocoque design. We use 2024 T3 all-clad aluminum, the same high-strength material used in the aerospace industry. This alloy has a tensile strength of 427 MPA, compared to the 186 MPA of the 3000-series alloy used by other brands. This makes a Bowlus more durable and resistant to elements like hail.

The assembly involves high-precision CNC machines and a specialized riveting process. We use authentic structural aircraft rivets (2117 aluminum alloy) spaced exactly one inch apart. This ensures the seam is as tight and strong as an airplane wing. Two-person teams use “buck riveting” techniques to set each of the 5,000 rivets by hand. After the shell is closed, we perform a demanding pressurized water test to ensure it is completely weather-tight. We then install polystyrene insulation, which is moisture-resistant and far superior to the cheap fiberglass insulation that can lead to mold and musty smells in traditional RVs.

Inside, we over-spec our systems for longevity and performance. Our wiring is one gauge larger than required to prevent voltage drops, and our integrated lithium power system—the first in the industry since 2016—is managed by a sophisticated Unix computer. This allows our technicians to remotely monitor your power system while you’re camping. For climate, we avoid roof-mounted units for better aerodynamics. Instead, the air conditioner is located within the shell, and we use hydronic radiant heating with signature heated floors for quiet, even warmth during winter camping.

Finally, we finish the interior with sustainable, UV-coated Baltic birch plywood. We use real wood with tongue-and-groove joinery and stainless steel screws, unlike the wood-photo laminates and staples found in other RVs. Our drawers are fabricated to private-jet standards, and our custom beds feature natural latex for a luxurious sleep. Every stage of production involves its own quality control, culminating in a final exhaustive check by two different departments.
